About Jaxharmony

The Jacksonville Harmony Show Chorus
has been a vibrant part of the Jacksonville Arts scene for over 40 years. Our members range in age from 18 to 70+ and represent women from a variety of backgrounds and professions.

Regularly scoring among the top three choruses in the state of Florida, the JHSC took second place in the 2006 Gulf-Atlantic
Region 9 Contest, with a well-deserved 632 point score earning them a WILD CARD slot for competing in the 2007 Sweet Adeline's International Competition hosted in in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
We are working diligently to once again compete at the International level as competitors for the 2009 Nashville International Competition.

BARBERSHOP ROCKS!!!

We sing women's a cappella
four-part barbershop harmony

Sweet Adelines choruses and quartets perform four-part a cappella harmony, barbershop style. This style of music lends itself to songs from any era – today’s ballads, popular show tunes, even jazz. Sweet Adelines have performed their unique style of music in a number of popular venues from professional sports stadiums, Olympic ceremonies, with major symphonies, and even on several popular television shows.

What Part Would You Sing?

The Tenor has a range is similar to a first soprano. Her part is almost always above the melody. She sings with lightness and
bell-like clarity -- and with no vibrato.

The LEAD generally sings the melody, in about the same range as an alto. The melody in women's barbershop music is pitched a little lower than that of regular choral music. A lead must sing with musical authority, moving smoothly and consistently through her range.

The BARITONE sings a harmony part which is in the same voice range as  the lead. A baritone's voice must be flexible, singing with strength and fullness when her notes are below the melody and with a lighter quality, more like a tenor, when her notes are above the lead's.

The BASS is the lowest voice in the chord. Her range is similar to that of a second alto or contralto. She sings with authority, fullness and strength. Her part is the foundation for the  barbershop sound.
